“This is a corking read, crisp, eloquent and – at times – laugh out loud. Spud writes with a deft touch, combining great context, a clear narrative and some wonderful asides about the madness of the world he found himself in. Read it and celebrate a terrific story, very well told.”
“Spud Ely tells it as it is, no nonsense, no bull just puts you right in the action”
I was the first person in the world to be arrested by British Police and threatened with a seven stretch for breaching, The United Nations Sanction – Order 2003, Article 8, (stealing Iraqi cultural property). The cultural property in question, was a large piece of bronze – Saddam Hussein’s left buttock from that iconic statue I was given by the US Marines who pulled it down in Baghdad, 2003. I was arrested for while trying to sell it to raise money for, The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and the American, Hope For The Warriors charity.
This book follows my serious journey covering the war up to Baghdad and then it moves to a more satirical tone following my fight with the British establishment for the bronze arse and at an attempt to get a negotiated settlement with the Iraq Government, then the Police lost the Arse File! Oh please no, not that old chestnut! Then, while on a visit to Kuwait an American Islamic art dealer suggested the bronze could be worth anything from, $7,000,000 to $10,000,000, so the arse then went on the run.
